The Future of Cities
Where people and planet thrive.
We know that human health and the health of the planet are inextricably interlinked. If we’re to continue keeping people healthy, we need to create healthy environments where they can thrive. Urban centres are on the frontlines of climate change - from being responsible for more than two-thirds of global energy consumption and more than 70% of global carbon emissions, to experiencing the growing health impacts of a changing climate. To turn the worlds’ cities into places that benefit both our health and the environment, we need cross-sector collaboration – including actions highlighted by Mitchell Joachim, Co-Founder of Terreform ONE, Diego Lopez Urruchi, Co-head of Architecture and Technology at the Norman Foster Foundation, Gary Cohen, President and Founder of Health Care Without Harm, Pia Heidenmark Cook, Non-Executive Director at Bupa, and David Croft, Head of Sustainability at Reckitt, which can help drive progress towards healthy and climate resilient cities. Turning these ideas into a reality is critical which is why we’re also excited to celebrate the launch of the Norman Foster Institute for the Sustainable Cities programme today, for which Bupa is the official health partner. The programme will draw on expertise across different disciplines and sectors to equip the next generation of architects and urban planners with the tools and skills to accelerate this transformation.
